- Before you start to choose a colour scheme, consider the items in your room that you might not want to change - things like flooring and furniture. Before buying large quantities of your chosen colour, try a Crown Matchpot on the walls that you're due to paint first.

Q. How much paint do I need?
A. To get the best finish, applying paint according to the correct spreading rate.
To start, measure the area you wish to paint by height and width in square metres, deducting the area for doors and windows. Then, look at the handy guide on the reverse of your Crown paints tin - there you'll find a symbol that will explain how many square metres that tin will cover. Remember - some jobs may require a second coat.

Q. What paint finish do I need?
A. Your choice of finish is usually a personal preference.
Matt, Silk and Eggshell are great if you want a muted finish. For shiny, slightly reflective walls choose Gloss, or if you need your walls to be durable then Mid Sheen or Washable Matt should fit the bill.

Q. How do I check the surface is ready for painting?
A. To get a wonderful finish to any painting project, make sure your surface is prepared properly before you start. New or shiny plaster, porous and chalky surfaces should be treated with Crown Trade Alkali Resisting Primer prior to painting. For wood and metal, use our range of primers on all surfaces. They help provide adhesion to the surface when applying your top coat, giving you the perfect finish.

Q. What tools do I need?
A. The tools you need will vary depending on the type of paint job you are undertaking. Below are a list of tools needed for typical painting jobs.
- Roller – allows you to paint large areas of wall quickly, giving you a smooth finish
- Brushes – perfect for the more intricate paint jobs. Usually used on wood and metal (e.g. doors and windows), and also when painting the edges of walls
- Scraper – for removing old wallpaper or flaky paint
- Sand Paper / Sanding Block – smooths surfaces before painting
- Masking Tape – protects surfaces like skirting boards and window sills from unwanted paint
