Attic Revival

Attic Revival

July 21, 2011
Have you been in your attic recently? For many people their attic is a completely unused part of the house. Why not take a look and see what forgotten treasures are lurking up there! You might be surprised to find that this space has a lot of potential and simply needs a bit of care and a lick of paint to become a functional room in your home.

An attic room should add value to your home so look to add a room that your home is currently lacking. There may be a need for another bedroom, perhaps a guest bedroom or den. Whatever you choose make sure you have the space available to create the room your home desires.

For most attic spaces light is the primary issue. Most rooms need some natural light as part of a design. If you wish for your attic to become a place that you and your family will spend time in, it will be necessary to add a Velux window. These are relatively inexpensive but will have to be installed by a professional. By placing a window centrally on one of the sloping ceiling walls you will get the most light into the space.

Use colour to create optical illusions to make the space feel larger or smaller, or to heighten the ceilings. Lines created with paint all help with optical illusions in decorating. You can use paint to draw attention to one wall. Pure white shades work particularly well in an attic room as they open up the area and introduce light. I recommend that you have a look at the new
Crown colour card at shades such as Sail White, White Light and White Scatter for that crisp, fresh feel.

If you go with a white theme I would recommend using some colour in an area of the room such as the skirting, ceiling beams or even a single wall. Stick to pastel shades to guarantee a bright feel to the room. Berry light, Yellow Dust and Apple Mist will all work well in confined spaces against dazzling white tones.

Alternatively you could have a look at the Crown Classic Collection which comprises of beautiful, elegant colours. Shades such as Organic Olive and Organic Stone that are rich olive greens look sophisticated and will help create an inviting fresh space. If you would prefer a brighter colour take a look at duck egg shades such as Elegant Chiffon or Elegant Gown.

Attics and lofts are notorious for low, sloped ceilings with odd angles and have multiple nooks and crannies. Use these features to your advantage when designing your room and decorating it. Odd-shaped spaces can become functional space for storage, display shelves, and seating. If budget is available it is worth investing in a customised piece of furniture for the room like a bookshelf or headboard. This way you can save space and create a feature at the same time.

Soft furnishings and accessories are a great way to complete the overall look and feel of your newly decorated room. By selecting pieces that suit the style of your room you can add colour and texture that can be easily be changed in the future. If you are working with sloped ceilings get creative with wall hangings or bunting rather than traditional picture frames.
