Beautiful BrownFebruary 14, 2012
I adore the colour brown, especially in eyes, hair and paint! It is an unsung hero in the colour world unfortunately and is often overlooked in favour of vibrant yellows, daring reds, cosmic blues and grassy greens. However, the addition of brown to a room not only adds a sophisticated quality but it also enhances other colours within that space. The colour of chocolate and coffee is synonymous with luxury, stability and simplicity, and is therefore the perfect addition to any home. The greatest attribute of brown is its ability to merge with and compliment any colour scheme.
When teamed with yellow or golden shades for example, brown really comes into its own. Subtle browns like Baking Day and Wheatgrass from Crown’s mid sheen emulsion are perfect for injecting a wholesome, rustic feel to any kitchen. Team these shades with warm creams and soft yellows to create a warm country kitchen.
If you seek a more romantic, sophisticated and sultry feel consider the rich brown tones of Mocha, Chocolate Comtesse or Tempting from Crown’s Indulgence range. With splashes of red, aqua or even a smoky pink, a living room or dining room will epitomise extravagance. A modern combination that I really love is Cocoa and Couture from Crown’s Solo One Coat, it is a modern and fresh look that will add elegance to a romantic bedroom or living room. Painting with Solo is really easy, it provides great coverage on walls, wood and metal. If painting your walls brown feels a bit risqué to you, then why not experiment with a brown leather couch, a velvet throw or a even a deep pile rug.
More and more people are opting for minimal and modern looks these days and often they lean towards whites, creams and silver grey’s to achieve this. This look can leave a room feeling cold and disconnected. To combat this, you could try out a feature wall in your home. This will piece complete the look whilst maintaining the minimalist, contemporary look. Some perfect shades for a luxurious brown feature wall are Choc Chip from the Easyclean range, Coffee Shop from Solo and for a lighter shade, check out Walnut from the Indulgence range.
A colour combination with a difference is brown and blue. This dynamic duo is fabulous in a living room. Golden browns such as Taupe Dark or Wildwood alongside Aqua Light or Stepping Stone will create a wistful and revitalising atmosphere. This combination works beautifully with mahogany or oak furniture. For accessories, a large vase filled with bamboo leaves or straw will add to the earthy feel of the room.
Brown is bold and beautiful, it’s neutral yet striking colour will give all the dramatic effect black has to offer without creating too much darkness in a room. It compliments almost all other shades, making it a particularly easy colour to work with. Regardless of your colour scheme, I guarantee you will transform the look of you room with a simple lick of paint!
Happy decorating!
