Blushing RedSeptember 17, 2010
Red is an often forgotten colour when it comes to decorating, due to its dramatic reputation. Whether you want to use a lot or just a little, red creates a vibrant visual impact and is a very powerful colour. I am going to talk you through the different ways of using red by focusing on the bedroom.
Red is associated with energy, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire and love. Red is an emotionally strong which makes it the perfect colour choice for your bedroom. There are various different shades of red and I would recommend deeper shades with pink undertones for a bedroom as they ignite feelings of romance and passion.
While many people love the colour red it can be a difficult colour to introduce to your home without it becoming overpowering to the senses. Why not start with a beloved piece of art rooted in red tones. It could be a painting or sculpture that you already have in your home. Use this as your starting point for introducing red. Match the shade already in the art piece or use variations of the colour and purchase other accessories in these shades. Try using a red rug or piece of furniture you can emphasise red if you want to introduce a small amount of red into your room.
If your experimentation with red is a success, why not move on to using paint on your walls. As I already mentioned the bedroom is the perfect place to use red and therefore the ideal place to start. Due to the striking nature of the colour, it works effectively when used on a feature wall. Try using a full bodied red such as English Fire or Crimson Kiss on your chosen wall along with a neutral off-white colour on the other walls. By using white throughout the room stippled with romantic red accessories the red on your walls will really make a statement.
Brown is also in the red spectrum and works well with bright red tones. For an indulgent bedroom why not try painting the walls of your room in luxurious chocolate tones such as Mocha and Chocolate Comtesse. Incorporate red into your colour scheme by using red bedding and red accessories. Similar to my first point try using red artwork on your walls. Artwork is a great way to introduce texture with minimal effort, select works of art that use unusual canvases or paints.
Lighting is also important to the elegant feel that red emulates. By using red light bulbs or red lampshades the colour of light can be changed to feed the atmosphere in your red room. Another interior designer trick to prevent you from buying new lampshades or lighting fixtures is to cover current ones with cloth. Try choosing fabric that incorporates your chosen colours, it is also an easy way to bring patterns into the room.
