Browned off!

Browned off!

May 5, 2010
The colour of chocolate and coffee is synonymous with wholesomeness, stability and simplicity, and is therefore the perfect addition to any home. The greatest attribute of brown is its ability to merge with any colour scheme with amazing results.

For example, teamed with yellow or golden shades, subtle browns such as Crown’s Wheatgrass, Baking Day or Wildwood, will create a beautifully rustic room, ideal for any kitchen. Whether it is introduced through wall colour, tiles, or soft furnishings, a touch of brown will add character to your room. Accessories such as chequered curtains or chair covers will complete this country-style kitchen.

If you seek a more romantic, sophisticated and sultry feel, add the rich brown tones of Mocha or Chocolate Comtesse from Crown’s Indulgence range. With splashes of red, purple or even a smoky pink, a living room or dining room will become the epitome of luxury. A combination I just adore for this look is Classic Beige or Classic Mocha teamed with Classic Rouge from Crown’s Classic Collection. If you prefer, introduce subtle brown shades to a living room with a rich brown leather sofa, velvet or textured curtains and a rug.

One of the more difficult styles to achieve is a minimalist look. Naturally, whites and creams such as Classic White or Classic Cream are the best starting point but this may leave your room feeling cold and disconnected. Add a neutral brown such as Classic Taupe or Organic Caramel to add some warmth and style. Create a focal point in the room with bright or bold artwork. For even more pizzazz, introduce a third colour through floral cushions or a patterned bedspread..

A colour combination with a difference is brown and blue. This dynamic duo is fabulous in a living room. Golden browns such as Wildwood or Taupe alongside Moonlight Bay or Mount Fuji will create a serene and revitalising atmosphere. For accessories, a large vase filled with bamboo leaves or straw will add to the earthy feel of the room. Alternatively, the deeper shade, Cocoa with Stepping Stone or Tranquillity in a dining room will create a classic yet striking style. This combination works beautifully as a backdrop for a mahogany or oak table and chairs.

Brown has made a big comeback in recent years. This neutral, yet striking colour will give the dramatic effect of black without creating darkness in a room. It works with almost all colours to either soften or enhance the colour scheme. Get creative and introduce shades of brown into your home today. Regardless of your colour scheme, I guarantee you will transform the look of you room with a simple lick of paint!

Happy decorating!
