Colour Influences - Part 3 - Nudes & 1950'sJanuary 20, 2011
Welcome to the third blog about our Colour Influences for 2011. We hope you enjoyed last week’s inspiring duo. This week our two influences are very different in terms of their basic elements and approach for use in your home. Remember these are primarily influences so you can take individual aspects from each of them to create the perfect look that is personal to you and your home.
The first of the two influences this is 1950s, an exciting period that was defined by rock ‘n roll, Elvis Presley and rockabilly style. It brings together the iconic aspects of this decade to create a dazzling look that is retro but with a unique, modern twist.
I think everyone will find something to love about this influence. Bright turquoises and blues with a dash of luminous greens feature which are guaranteed to lift your spirits. These colours can be balanced out with neutral shades of grey, sand and where possible can benefit from a flash of silver. Due to its bright, cheery colours, 1950s influenced design schemes sit perfectly in kitchens, conservatories or any outdoor area that you have in your home.
Crown Paints has a beautiful selection of bright tones to match this palette. Colours such as Cool Aqua, Aqua Source and Aqua Fizz capture this look. Soft Steel, Cornerstone and Lilac Torch will work to balance out the room and bring your design together. Don’t be afraid to mix different types of paint for this look. Try a high gloss turquoise on a feature wall along with a matt grey for a stunning effect.
This look is very versatile and can be used in any room in your home with a few adjustments. If you like the idea of a 1950s inspired bedroom, why not use the muted tones on the walls in your room. Classic pink such as Mademoiselle and fuller greys such as Lilac Touch complement each other effortlessly. To complete the look you should pick up accessories in retro tones of turquoise to create a quirky yet relaxing environment. Why not source some 1950s prints or furniture in antique shops and car-boot sales to complete the look.
The second colour influence I would like to introduce to you is Nudes. I am very excited about this look as I think it is the ultimate palette to create a sexy, glamorous space. Decorating with nude or neutral shades can often be in danger of becoming boring or predictable but this inspiring mix of colours will prove otherwise.
The dominant colours for this look are cooling shades such as Apple Mist and Lightest Beige. These colours work with more indulgent tones such as Café au Lait, Old Gold and Gold Dusk for a classic finish. While your choice of paint is important, your choice of accessories and fabrics will also be crucial to the finished space.
As the overall look is luxurious and feminine, fabric will play a key role in your design. Look for heavy, lavish materials that will hang and create the prefect bedroom hideaway. You can mix textiles once you keep to the same colour palette. Try combining linen, silk and lace on your bed with cushions and throws for the perfect finish.
I really enjoyed talking about these two Colour Influences this week. Next week I will be looking to the last of the influences for 2011, Space and Amethyst, which are both full of vibrant colour.
Happy decorating,
Neville
