Conservatory conundrumJune 10, 2011
Sunrooms appear to be the ideal place to decorate, they are bright airy and open by nature. People often make the same mistake of avoiding colour and bold trends for fear it will make their conservatory stand apart from the house rather than complement it.
There is no denying that neutral shades often work well in these types of spaces. Crown offers a variety of natural shades such as Snowdrop, Magnolia, Wildwood and Liqueur which would all work nicely in a sunroom. What you don’t want is a dull space that features just one shade. A room with magnolia floors, ceilings, blinds and flooring will not get you on the front page of House and Home.
The Crown Classic Collection has a variety of subtle and sophisticated shades which I love to use in a sunroom. Check out Classic Rouge for an inviting rose colour, or the variety of beautiful tones to provide a pop of colour such as Elegant Jade, Modern Living and Organic Caramel. These shades are all quite different and will add a real sense of style to your sunroom.
Alternatively, Terracotta Glow, Oriental Ginger or San Fernando will provide a fabulous back drop for your room, giving it a warm inviting feel even when there are grey skies! Energetic yellow shades from the Crown range would also be a good choice for your sunroom such as Happy Daze, Hot Sun, Siesta Sun and Sunrise. Let your creative side out while you experiment with colours!
Add plants and flowers to your room in order to create a nice flow from inside to out. A large plant can be used as a great focal point for the room and indoor plants in pots and vases of varying shapes will add to the exotic feel. I love mixing and matching materials, plants and vases in sunrooms to create a real sense of escapism. If you are creative you could event try decorating your own plant pot to fit in with your design.
I am a firm believer in wicker or natural material furniture in a sunroom, this allows the flow of nature inside and will go with most colour schemes. Cushions, pillows and rugs will add to the comfort of your room but ensure that you check the labels. Only choose materials which are UV-resistant as you will need them to withstand the sun! This is another opportunity to introduce colour so if you were a little shy in using vibrant shades on your walls choose unique brightly designed soft furnishings.
Conservatories are a room that many people choose to practice their hobby as it’s a warm, quieter place in the home. If this is true in your case, remember to allow space for your interests. This might be as simple as adding a comfortable chair or shelves for your music and art supplies. Conservatories also make great rooms for entertaining if you need to move a BBQ indoors or simply want to retire inside.
Remember, while neutral shades are a beautiful base colour for a room, every space needs a touch of colour whether it be through paint or accessories. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through when you pick the colours you love. This room is for enjoyment and relaxation and this should be reflected in its style.
Happy decorating!
