Creating the Illusion of Light and Space in your Home

February 18, 2010
One of the simplest ways you can create the illusion of space in your home is with the use of colour. White is a fantastic colour to use to make a room appear much larger but is not to everyone’s taste as it can look stark. If bright white isn’t to your liking, try adding a few drops of your favourite colour for a tinted, warmer look.

Similarly if you paint surfaces pale, cool or pastel shades such as pale green, grey-blue or pearl, this can make a room appear much larger. I recommend checking out Crown’s Classic Collection – shades such as Classic Rouge, Classic Tundra, or Elegant Scent.

Beige or light grey shades are great choices for medium sized rooms with little light. You might like to try Aspen Silver, Cascade or Mink from Crown Indulgence Range. I recommend painting ceilings, skirting and window frames Brilliant White which will add height to rooms. A nice approach to give a room a more contemporary feel is to paint the window frames and skirting in the same shade used on the walls, but do keep to brilliant white for the ceiling to add height.

You can also try bright colours which help reflect light back into a room. Take a look at Sunrise or Happy Daze which are beautiful yellow shades from Crown that will help you achieve this affect.

Mirrors are another fantastic way to create the illusion of space and reflect light. Hang large mirrors on walls opposite or adjacent to windows or entrants. Placing a large mirror above the mantel piece in a living room is a great way to create the illusion of a much larger space.

If you have a small bathroom you should hang a full length mirror in it to open up the room and make it appear much larger. If you want your hallway to appear longer place a mirror on the end wall to double it in length.

It is important to keep furniture to a minimal and I think it is a good idea to avoid heavy dark furniture that will block light and divide up the room. Glass furniture is a good choice as it allows light to reflect throughout the room. You might like to consider replacing dark closed wardrobe doors with sliding mirrored doors to open up the space. For small bedrooms, consider repainting wood furniture in a classic cream or off white shade, which will transfer the feel of the room and help modernise the space.

Glass coffee tables and dining tables with a sharp contemporary design can certainly give the illusion of space to any room. Metals are also reflective particularly polished stainless steel, copper and chrome.

Clutter can really make a room appear smaller so why not purchase dual purpose furniture such as fold-out sofas, futons, beds with built in drawers or coffee tables with underneath storage.

Happy decorating
