Decorating your children’s roomJune 16, 2010
Over the past couple of months I have received quite a lot of queries about decorating children’s bedrooms ranging from nursery decorating to young children growing up, to worried parents with inventive teenagers on their hands. All these queries got me thinking; why not write my next blog on these situations to help those of you stuck in similar predicaments.
Nursery
Let’s start with the nursery. . . there are many colour schemes that will work in a nursery but it is a good idea to keep colours calm and light with some cheerful tints. It is always good to pick a fabric or design that you would love to use in your child’s nursery and take a look at the background colour. This should be the colour to use on your walls as a backdrop.
By choosing a solid colour for the walls, you can then focus on accessories and artwork such as wall art or a verse from your favourite nursery rhyme. Soft shades of cream or off-whites will help create a relaxed and restful room, while also making it feel more spacious and elegant.
Cotton Twill, Lightest Beige, Flawless Fawn or Golden Glow are beautiful shades from Crown Paints Easyclean range which are bright and warm and perfect for a nursery. Choosing a light shade of green or blue can create a calming and restful space associated with relaxation. Palest Green, Astonish or Elegant Scent are fabulous shades from Crown Paints that will help you create a peaceful environment.
If you have budget for this, why not choose a theme for your baby’s room not necessarily specific to gender but more like a painted a scene from a fairytale or a classic story book. I love the idea of painting the ceiling with a blue sky and fluffy white clouds as this can be quite soothing and spark the imagination. You can apply a mini mural to a wall but you should try to avoid covering the entire nursery with themed motifs.
Children’s Room
Parents are often faced with decorating dilemmas when their children get older and start taking an interest in decorating their rooms. Children from the ages of 6-11 tend to change what they like rapidly so rather than painting the walls with their favourite colours, frame a poster of their favourite cartoon character or purchase themed bed sheets. This will save you money in the long run as you will not have to redecorate the entire room each year. Accessories can be easily updated as quickly as their tastes.
A light blue could be a good choice for your children’s room as it is believed to promote learning and self empowerment. Palest Blue or Tranquillity from the Crown Easyclean collection is the perfect finish as it allows you to wipe away stains without leaving those annoying shiny patches!
Green is a very calming colour, promotes creativity and adds light to a room. Almost Sage or Palest Green are great for kid’s rooms.
Another creative way to decorate your children’s room is with wall stickers. There are so many fantastic websites where you can purchase fun stickers that your children can use in their rooms and they’re really cheap too.
Allow your children to get involved in choosing their bed sheets, posters and fixtures as this will let their own individuality shine and they will feel they are an important part in the whole decorating process.
Teenagers Dilemma
Many teenagers go through a phase of wanting to paint their bedrooms in crazy colour schemes from jet black to metallic silver and even cerise pink. It tends to imply that they are growing up and want to express their individuality by putting their own mark on their bedrooms. This can be a very daunting time for parents as teenagers are not easily swayed.
A compromise may be reached where instead of painting all the walls in their chosen colours, stripes or a border of stencils in their chosen colour may suffice. Modern Classics from the Crown Classic Collection is also a good place to start when hoping to compromise. These fresh and funky colours are perfect for a young person’s bedroom Modern Living or Modern Chic are deep blue and purple colours which will add character to a teenager’s bedroom.
If you are finding it difficult to convince your teenager to move away from their drastic colour choice there are ways to incorporate the colour without overwhelming the room. Instead of a jet black, introduce them to the colour grey. Both glamorous and sophisticated, this colour can produce amazing results. Modern Urban, Aspen Silver or Soft Steel are all elegant shades which can be brightened up with a range of colours. For example, why not add a hot pink bedspread and curtains for a funky look. A black headboard or bedspread will create a classy and luxurious look. Team this with full length black curtains for a perfect combination.
I hope these tips assist you through these difficult decorating dilemmas and help you in making the perfect choice for your children’s bedrooms.
Happy decorating,
Neville
