Don’t Forget the Fifth WallMay 27, 2010
Ceilings shouldn’t be ignored because they are in actual fact an integral part of interior decorating. They can be used to emphasise and enhance the décor of a room while giving it a unique style. By adding colour to the ceilings in your home, you will add dimension and personality to a space.
Painting your ceiling is a cost effective way to give any room in your home a new inviting look. So it’s time to let go of simplicity as ceilings no longer need to remain a neutral shade of white. Here are a few ideas for you to start looking at new ways of decorating the ceilings in your home.
By painting your ceiling a deeper colour such as navy, chocolate or charcoal, this will help a larger room with high ceilings feel cosy and more defined as the ceilings will naturally descend. You can continue your ceiling paint onto the walls for several inches to give the effect of a coved ceiling.
A very effective approach is to paint your walls and ceilings the same colour. By choosing tones from the same colour scheme, you will be guaranteed that the shades look good together. Why not try a varying shade from your exiting colour scheme and let your choice depend on whether you want to paint your ceiling a lighter or darker shade to your wall colour.
You can also create a haze effect by painting your ceiling a grey or blue-grey shade such as Cascade, Gallery White or Aspen Silver from Crown Paints.
You can easily make a small room or room with low ceilings feel larger by painting the ceiling a lighter colour. This allows a room to open up and feel larger than it actually is. Soft colours such as sky blues, peach tones or sunlight yellows are the perfect choice to create this effect.
Stencil designs are a fantastic choice for decorating a ceiling. Creating a centrepiece around a chandelier or leaf stencil around the edge of the ceiling are just a few of my personal favourites. A great choice for a nursery or child’s playroom is to create a sky mural with clouds and fairytales. Clouds will open up a room and help create a calming atmosphere. Colour Wash on your ceilings is a perfect choice for small hallway ceilings and master bathrooms. A soft aged wash of translucent colours will add depth to any ceiling.
If you do not want to paint the entire ceiling why not paint a pattern such as large diamonds or circles to add visual interest to the room. A great way to hide imperfections is to use fabrics on sections of the ceiling. This can also be a great addition above a bed to create a relaxing and soothing atmosphere.
Remember ceilings do not have to be boring and should receive just as much attention as wall and flooring when decorating. Why not give yourself something to look up at by adding a little style to the ceilings in your home.
Happy decorating,
