Feeling blueSeptember 16, 2011
With the blustery blue September weather we have been getting the past week it got me thinking about the colour blue and how too often people are afraid to incorporate it into their homes.
Blue is one of my favourite shades because it brings with it infinite possibilities. It has a calming influence; so when gracing a wall, it conveys an overall feeling of serenity. It is very much a colour of the moment and because it portrays a calm, restful character it is perfectly suitable for interior design, especially for bedrooms. Blue Light and Moonlight Bay are two light shades from the Crown Collection that would work well in a bedroom space. Modern Living on the other hand is a deep sultry blue from the Crown Classic collection that will create a sense of quiet drama while giving a luxurious feel. This rich blue is amazing when teamed with dark wood or classic marble. It also works surprisingly well with pink tones.
A truly relaxing and refreshing colour scheme comes from the Mediterranean. Combine the enriching blues with sandy yellows and golden shades to create a perfect haven. For a kitchen or bathroom, the ocean tones of Blue Mid, Lupin and Palest Blue are ideal. Team with warm shades such as Pale Gold, Egyptian Sand or Golden Glow. Accessories such as sea shells, rope or beaded tie backs for curtains and colourful ceramic tiled vases will bring this look to life.
More and more people are starting to use blue in offices, day rooms and even to decorate summer gardens and kitchens. Blue in offices supposedly has a good impact on the attentiveness of the workers. People are more productive in blue rooms, focused and creative.
Where better to add a touch of serenity than in your kitchen. For a comfortable and striking space, deep blues work beautifully on a splash back. Royal blue tiles for example will create a fabulous focal point in your kitchen. Alternatively, why not paint your cabinets Windsor Blue, Making Waves or Oxford Blue? Blue generally symbolizes harmony, peace, healing and happiness. Too much blue in a room can make it quite gloomy- a little like our recent weather, so it’s important to create a good balance between the natural light in the room and the shade of blue you choose for your walls.
Navy blue for example is a dark colour that requires careful selection. When incorporated in the right space and with the right quantity, it can create the perfect blend of harmony and sophistication. If you are going to use navy blue to decorate your bedroom such as Dramatic from Crown Paints, you should combine it with light, positive colours such as white, camel, light beige, light gray or pearl. To make the blue décor more subtle, paint your walls in white or light beige and incorporate white or dark wood furniture and lots of pretty soft furnishings.
Happy decorating!
