Feng Shui your Bedroom

Feng Shui your Bedroom

April 22, 2010
Firstly, remove all TV’s, computers, and exercise equipment. Feng Shui principles advise that these items will drain your room of energy, leaving you more tired after a night’s sleep. From a decorator’s perspective, these items are a distraction and will take from the room’s overall beauty. However, I do concede that this is easier said than done. If this seems like an insurmountable task, try covering these items or storing them away when they are not in use.

As Feng Shui is the Chinese art of creating a harmonious energy, light is considered to be the best way to influence energy in a room. A special importance is therefore put on the level of lighting in a bedroom. I advise using softer lighting in bedrooms to create a more soothing or romantic atmosphere. Dimmer switches or even candles will illuminate your room beautifully.

Colour choice, is always an important factor. Feng Shui principles promote “skin colours” as the most effective for creating energy for a restorative sleep. While I love to see a variety of colours in a bedroom, I do agree that neutral tones will give a more relaxing feel. Crown offers a selection of shades in skin tones, ranging from milky white to chocolate brown. At the paler end of the spectrum, check out Sail White, Mimosa, Taupe or Wheatgrass for a calming room. You could also add touches of the deeper colours with Cocoa, Brown Sugar or Decaf for a sophisticated feel.

Crown’s Classic Collection also provides the beige and brown hues of Classic Umber, Classic Buff and Classic Beige which will all create a soothing atmosphere. To add a splash of colour, team these tones with green or yellow fabrics on your bedspread and curtains.

Images in your room are also important. Avoid sad, lonely, or violent images in your bedroom. According to Feng Shui experts, these type of images will encourage this type of energy into your life. Why not surround yourself with happy memories and smiling faces? I often recommend framing photographs of friends and family. Alternatively, check out my blog on paint effects for more inspiration. Stencilled designs on your walls will add personality and style to your room.

If you truly wish to Feng Shui your room, ensure that all doors are closed whilst you are sleeping including wardrobe doors. Also avoid putting plants in your room as they will drain the room of oxygen. Large mirrors are also a no-no! However, I can’t see too many of you parting with mirrors for the sake of Feng Shui! Ultimately it is all about balance. There are no hard and fast rules, so go with what makes you comfortable!

While I do not recommend following these tips to the letter, they are worth considering when you begin to create your own retreat from the world. Your bedroom should reflect your personality so let your creative side out when choosing the style of your room.

The best advice I could give you is to eliminate clutter. This act alone will make your room a much more harmonious space before you even change a thing!

Happy decorating!
