Fit for a princessDecember 16, 2010
With Christmas around the corner there are plenty of parents rushing to get all of the presents finalised and make sure there is money left over for Christmas dinner. I have always found little girls harder to buy for than boys. There is a limit on how many dolls a girl can own. This Christmas why not give your daughter a gift that will last for plenty of years to come, a new bedroom!
There is nothing better than a perfect little getaway to escape to no matter what age you are. There are so many exciting things you can do to create a girly bedroom it can be daunting knowing where to start. It helps to choose a design scheme, pick a theme such as fairies, butterflies or princesses and style your room around these themes.
To help your child feel extra special this Christmas why not involve her as much as possible. Ask her how she would like to theme the room, maybe she has a favourite animal or is passionate about music. Whatever the theme may be, help her feel like part of it as much as possible. Projects are a good way to make them feel included. Ask your child to create a big painting for the room, get them involved in the painting of the room or shopping for accessories. All of this will help the child take ownership of the room.
If you choose to go with a fairy or butterfly theme, look for pink, lilacs and purples. My favourite pinks to use in children’s rooms are Crown’s Beauty Queen, Couture and Fine Berry. It is often a good idea to contrast the pink shades with purple shades which will tone down the vivid pinks while keeping the overall scheme very girly. Use purples such as Soap Stream and Purple Heart on a single wall or lower half the wall to add perspective to the room.
The next step is to revamp the furniture in the room. Sand down any old furniture that you may have, snow-white paint is a beautiful way to incorporate your furniture into the room. Check out some of my previous blogs on how to re-upholster chairs for a simple unique touch for any bedroom.
Another great way to transform older furniture into pieces fit for a princess is to create a day bed. Day beds are beds that can also be used as seating during the day and are perfect for smaller children. This can be done by attaching a larger piece of wood to one of the longer sides of the bed. This piece can be covered in padding and then colourful patterned fabric to create the look. When your child gets a bit older the extra panel can be removed.
Wall stickers are a great way to decorate themed rooms. Wallstickers.ie has a fantastic range of children’s wall stickers and stencils. Their range includes fairies, butterflies, animals and even custom made stickers with your child’s name. This can be a great way to decorate your freshly painted room and incorporate your child’s chosen theme.
If you are a particularly creative you could also paint a mural on one of the walls. This can be a great feature in the room and is also an opportunity to get your kids involved in the decorating process. Crown emulsion match pots are the perfect product to use for this as there is just 40mls in each pot. Flick through your daughter’s favourite story books to get some inspiration for the murals.
Add your finishing touches to complete the room. Remember to have plenty of storage so toys can be tidied away easily. Bookshelves are great in children’s room as they can store a multitude of items without taking up a large area of the room. Finish with some of your child’s artwork and you will have a gorgeous bedroom ready for your little princess. Happy Decorating,
