Get the blues

Get the blues

June 4, 2010

We take in blue's beautiful hues on a daily basis from the sky, the sea, mountain tops and various flora and fauna. It is therefore no wonder that this soothing colour is an all time favourite in interior design.

There are a number of ways to introduce this colour to your home. A truly relaxing and refreshing colour scheme is that of the Mediterranean. Combine the enriching blues with sandy yellows and golden shades to create a perfect haven. For a kitchen or bathroom, check out the ocean tones of Tranquillity, Blue Note and Palest Blue from the Crown range. Teamed with the golden shades of Jersey Cream, Popcorn or Golden Glow, you will achieve that sunny feel. Accessories such as sea shells, rope or beaded tie backs for curtains and colourful ceramic tiled vases will bring this look to life.

For a more sophisticated and classic style, combine deep blues with white or pale blue/grey. For example Blue Mosel teamed with Simple White or Cascade will create a fresh look. The entire style of this room can then be determined through accessories. Gingham curtains in navy or blue will create a country style feel. Alternatively, a white or black couch against the backdrop of a rich blue such as Sea Spirit or Silhouette will create a regal and vintage tone in your room. Paint skirting boards a pristine white to truly complete this look. Add ornate vases and mirrors, to really create an air of aristocracy. Patterned white, blue or beige cushions will also add to this style.

An exciting new blue paint was recently launched in the new edition of Crown’s Classic Collection. Modern Living, a deep sultry blue is one of eight new shades in the Modern Classics. For a classic style with a twist, add this shade to a living room or bedroom for fantastic results. This rich blue is amazing when teamed with dark wood or a deep marble. It also works surprisingly well with pink tones. Add long smoky pink curtains and large oversized cushions to add a subtle contrast. This shade will create a sense of quiet drama while giving a luxurious feel.

Where better to add a touch of serenity than in your kitchen. For a comfortable and striking space, deep blues work beautifully on a splash back. Royal blue tiles for example will create a fabulous focal point in your kitchen. Alternatively, why not paint your cabinets? Winsor Blue, Blue Mosel and Oxford Blue all come in Solo®  One Coat Gloss. This paint is perfect for giving wood, plastic or metal furniture a face lift. For full details on how to paint your kitchen cabinets check out my blog on painting wood here.

Teamed with vibrant reds such as Red Hot, your kitchen will come to life. For a softer, more classic kitchen, yellows and peaches such as Just Lemon, Energise or Perfect Toast will compliment blues beautifully.

From bathrooms and kitchens to living areas and bedrooms, blue will work in any space. If it’s a soothing atmosphere you seek, or a bolt from the blue, you will find a range of shades of this colour to satisfy every whim!

Happy decorating!
