Gorgeous grey interiors

August 26, 2011
A lot of people can shy away from statement colours such as grey when decorating their homes. The problem is that too many people tend to associate the colour grey with dullness but it doesn't have to be this way. Grey is a fantastic colour to use in interior decorating as it can offer a soothing, cooling atmosphere to many rooms. It is a classic refined neutral shade that works well with many other colour schemes throughout your home and can be used as both a primary design colour and an accent shade.

First thing I would recommend that you do is sit down and have think about the mood you want to create in each of the rooms you wish to decorate. From this you will be able to find the right combination of colours and textures.

Depending on the shade you use, grey can create a sense of peaceful formality or can portray a sense of old-time elegance. Choose a light grey with warm undertones such as Mink from the Crown Collection. This classic shade creates a unifying look that can calm and restore any room in your home. Rich and luxurious charcoal grey’s such as Elegant Shade and City Life can be paired beautifully with crisp white room accents and trims, particularly in a bedroom space. An elegant grey such as Aspen Silver conveys a sense of spaciousness that makes it ideal for small bedrooms and hallways.

Grey works equally well in a kitchen space as it can create a cool cleanness. Grey cabinets and kitchens appliances can add a good balance of formality to your kitchen. The bathroom is another great place to incorporate the shade when combined with other neutral colours like tan or burnt orange to create a more contemporary look.

Create a haven of comfort and security in your living room space by teaming a tranquil grey shade such as Elegant Smoke with a bold turquoise, jade and a dusky lilac. Mix it up with white and keep the furnishings sparse to pull off this look.

Gallery White or Modern Urban are stylish grey shades with a cool blue undertone that reflects a sophisticated 21st century urban space.

Don't be afraid to combine grey with other colors to alter the mood of the space. Grey can really enhance bright colours especially when those colours are used in dramatic ways. Certain shades of grey can soften the impact of bold colour and create an interesting appearance.

One of my favorite colour combinations is grey and purple as it creates a dramatic look. You can introduce the colour purple through your soft furnishings such as a rug or plush pillows. You can use grey to outline the windows in your home or to frame your doors. This will bring a soothing quality to the space and set your home apart. .

Happy decorating,
Neville
