How to choose a paint finish

May 10, 2011
When you begin a paint project, it is normally the colour choice that people are most concerned with, however, choosing the right paint product can make the world of difference to the overall finish of your walls. With so many paint products to choose from, it can be very difficult to know which one is the best suited for your space.

Paint is the easy, cost-effective way to keep up with colour trends. The finish of a paint product can affect how the colour influences the overall atmosphere in the room. There are numerous paint finishes on the market from one coat gloss to odour-free emulsions. To help direct you in your choice, I have created a simple guide to Crown’s product range and where they are best used.

Emulsion paint

Emulsion paint is a highly popular paint for walls and ceilings, due to the fact that it is water-based which makes it easy to apply; it has little odour and dries quickly. This means the paint is particularly easy to apply to walls that have already been painted and on certain wall coverings. However, if unsure always seek advice from an expert before applying to your surface.

Crown Paints have two main emulsion products, Matt and Mid-Sheen. The Matt product is a non-reflective finish which is particularly good for hiding uneven surfaces. The Matt product works well for the primary colours and should be used in the busier rooms of your home.

If you have a feature that you would like to make a focus in a room, Mid-Sheen is the most suitable product. This is hardwearing and wipe clean with a slight gloss polish that’s ideal for highlighting surfaces. Many of the 2011 Colour Trends that we discussed back in January included Mid-Sheen, luminous shades so look out for these when you are considering redecorating your home.

If you are painting your kitchen or bathroom you will need a product that will withstand the rigours of these high traffic spaces. Crown has formulated their Mid-Sheen Kitchen and Bathroom Emulsions to be tough and moisture resistant so you won’t have to worry about the additional humidly ruining your fresh paint job.

Satin

Satin is a solvent-based paint similar to gloss, but it has a less shiny finish. Satin is easier to apply as it does not normally need an undercoat if used over a previously painted surface, and it is particularly good for painting skirting boards, architraves and internal doors.

Gloss

A gloss product, as you can guess offers a highly focused sheen. Gloss is the preferred choice for woods and metals due to its hard-wearing properties. Crown Paints have a beautiful range of high-gloss colours that will produce a tough and practical finish. Always remember to use a high quality primer or undercoat before your gloss product to ensure you get the most from the colour.

Perfect finish in a hurry

Crown has devised the perfect product if you are looking to transform a room in one weekend! Crown’s Solo One Coat Products are available in an Emulsion, Gloss or Satin finish and are formulated to provide full coverage with just one coat every time. The Gloss and Satin finishes are extremely tough and durable so they can even be used on woods and metals which means that you can revamp the key features in your home with little effort. This product is available in a number of beautiful warming colours, perfect for giving your home a face-lift in anticipation of unexpected visitors.

Easyclean Washable Matt Paints

No matter what paint colour you choose, once you have finished you should be able to sit back and enjoy your freshly painted room. Crown’s Easyclean Washable Matt Emulsion makes this possible with its deep protection against scruffs and marks on your walls, ceilings, wood, metal, radiator and melamine. This means you can relax about the reality of family life and keep your walls looking as bright as the day they were first painted.

I hope this blog has opened your eyes to the range of possibilities that can be achieved from a paint finish. If you would like to learn more about any of Crown’s product range please visit their website here!
