Icy Interiors

December 6, 2010

With much of the country disrupted by the snow last week many of us were cursing the white powder that engulfed our cities and towns. However, if you took the time to venture out of the city and into the hills you were reminded of the pure white beauty that snow embodies. The silence and tranquillity that snow brings to the land is breathtaking.

In this blog I thought I would look at snow inspired looks that are icily beautiful. Ice blues, deep greens and cool whites are the colours that I have been playing with this week. These colours lend themselves to creating cool, contemporary looks and more often than not fit in perfectly with Scandinavian design I spoke about a few weeks ago.

The first place these looks work well in is the bathroom; cool blues such as Soft Aqua, Elegant Gown and Aqua Source give the perfect wintery feel. Use different contrasting colours at different levels on the wall and through the room for the best result. If your room is small try using panels of colour to elongate it. Use snow white or silver accessories to add a little unique touch to the space.

Green is another frosty colour that I love to use in the bedroom. Crystal greens such as Invigorate, Astonish and Elegant Scent are a beautiful way to bring a snowy, clean feel to your bedroom without using white paint. Complement with icy blue shades like those mentioned in the last paragraph. Mirrors and candles all add to the glacial elegance in your bedroom.

I spoke about using the colour white in interior design in a previous blog, one of my favourite suggestions was the ‘whiting out’ of your living room. This involves committing to using just white paint and furniture in the room. If would like to use this idea why not add an extra winter touch by adding more texture to the room. Use white fur rugs and abstract white lampshades to add depth to your design.

Let’s face it, one of the first things that comes to mind when you think of snow is sparkle. So why not add a twinkle to your home and make your room feel really special. Look for sliver accessories that are not overly seasonal so that you won’t feel like it is Christmas in the middle of July. Mirrors, silver lined cushions and curtains as well as glass photo frames are the perfect example of these types of accessories.

You cannot have a snow inspired room without considering your lighting plan. Snow brings a muted silence and magical atmosphere that can be recreated in your chosen room. Use fairy lights in creative ways to have a serene, blue haze. Place the lights in vases with other materials or accessories to create fabulous features for your fireplace or floor. Try hanging lights behind fabric to manipulate the brightness of the lights you are using. For bathrooms candles often work best, place these in silver or glass holders for that extra snowy effect.

Happy Decorating,
