Ideas for Decorating a Feature Wall

January 28, 2010
To make your life a little easier I’ve decided to provide you with some of my personal favourites that you may like to try in different rooms throughout your home.

The best wall to make into a feature is the wall you want to focus most on. It can be a wall with a chimney breast, the wall behind your headboard, the wall with your favourite photos or simply the wall your eye is most drawn to in the room.

Dominant feature wall
One of the most obvious yet very effective ideas for a feature wall is to use a dominant shade that is both bold and striking. It can add diversity and excitement to a room in one easy step. All you need to do is pick the colour.

Coloured cupboards
If you have a wall with built in storage, why not make it a feature by painting each door a different colour to create a modern barcode effect. You can stick to traditional tones or you could choose funky shades and paint alternating colours on each door.

Stripe it up
Painting vertical stripes on a wall is a perfect way to add height to room that feels small. Start by painting the wall in a flat, subtle shade, then divide the area into equal bands using low-tack masking tape. You can also alternate the width of the stripes for extra creativity. Have fun with the look by continuing the stripe design onto furniture and accessories.

Why not make your bed the centre of attention by decorating the wall behind with horizontal bands of colour to help open it up and make the room appear bigger and broader.

Painted headboard
Forget buying a new headboard for your bed; why not paint one straight on to the wall. Crown Paints provide a very creative idea for stencilling a headboard in their Crown colourcard.

Flocked Wallpaper
Make a statement with bold flocked wallpaper on a feature wall. There are some beautiful textures available from velvet and vibrant shades. I recommend taking a look at the Romo collection for some inspiration. Combined with muted grey paint shades on the three remaining walls can create a real indulging space.

Fabric Wall
For a modern easy way to add depth and luxury to a bedroom why not hang a selection of quilted cushions to a wall. It is a good idea to paint the backdrop wall in deep luxurious shade before hanging your plush cushions.

Decorating a feature wall doesn’t have to be a difficult task, with a little guidance and colour, you can add a real sense of style throughout your home.

Happy decorating,

Neville
