Interior Paint Techniques

April 1, 2010
Choosing to use decorative painting techniques can be a very daunting task at first, particularly when you have never done anything like it before. Don’t panic!! There are endless amounts of websites available which provide step-by-step guides on how best to achieve these fabulous effects.

In a similar way that colour can energise a room, design elements can fill a room with visual interest and are a great way to introduce more daring tones that you may be reluctant to use on a complete wall space. Not only is it a less expensive way to decorate, it is also a fun task to carry out when you have spare time on your hands.

Faux painting is one technique that can be used to make a room truly beautiful. Sponging and Ragging are quick finishes that can add real depth to a room. You can achieve these techniques by applying a base coat in a dark colour and then sponge or rag a second lighter shade over it or visa versa.

Creating the illusion of a headboard by stencilling the area over your bed in a contrasting colour is a great stencil idea. It can add shine and a touch of glamour to the room. I recommend taking a look at the Crown colour card for some inspiration. The first step is to make sure you purchase a good quality stencil brush which you can pick up easily from your local DIY store. Spray a light, even coat, of adhesive on the back of the stencil. If the wall is cold or damp make sure to use some low tack tape in addition to the adhesive. Apply the paint from the outside in, either in a tapping or circular motion. The key is to take your time and remove the stencil from the wall gently.

A couple of my personal favourites are Greek or Egyptian style stencils which can work beautifully in a living room or kitchen. You might consider rustic leaf stencils along your hallway and some seashell stencils for your bathroom. Online shops are the best place to find an extensive range of stencils at a good price. Silver or Gold tones work superbly on bold colours and are a great way of creating different moods in selected rooms. Crown Paints has teamed up with the Stencil Library to offer a fabulous collection of key stencil designs that are well worth a look. Check it out here.

Pattern painting is a cost effective way to create individuality in a room as you can easily design your own your pattern template from a strong piece of cardboard. You will firstly need to decide what colours will best compliment the shades on your walls and depending on patterns you have chosen, you may need to repaint the chosen wall before applying a pattern. Chose a base colour that is neutral for the wall and will work well with the style of pattern you have chosen. The designs you chose do not need to be loud or overpowering.

Very popular patterns used to create height in dining/living rooms are vertical bold lines in contrasting colours of cream and dark cream tones. You may prefer blocked patterns or horizontal lines to widen a particular room.

With careful consideration of the styles you choose, you will have an impeccably stylish and unique emphasis made on your home.

Happy decorating!
