Not just a bathroomDecember 8, 2011
There are few rooms that we can lock ourselves into without people being concerned, but your bathroom is one. Unfortunately, they can be overlooked and unloved when it comes to DIY décor. The sheer functionality of the room is sometimes off-putting and intimidating, but do remember that the smallest room can have the biggest personality so experiment and have fun with your bathroom décor, put the fun in functional!
Bathrooms tend to be extensions of our bedrooms, whether they are en-suite or not and given the amount of ‘me’ time spent in these rooms, it is only fair that we give them some decorative TLC. Unless you live in a custom built house, you probably wish your bathroom was bigger, thankfully there are a few simple tricks to combat this and make the room look and feel more spacious.
Painting is the quickest, easiest and cheapest way to refresh your bathroom. Crown’s kitchen and bathroom emulsion is formulated to resist steam and condensation. You can use it on walls, ceilings, wood and metal so it is the perfect choice for your entire bathroom. When choosing shades for your walls, it really is a personal style choice but I recommend you try to avoid heavy or dark colours as they can make the room feel small and crowded. Instead opt for bright and light shades that add warmth and colour. Green is a great colour to work with in a bathroom because of its clean and sharp feeling. Soft Duck Egg, Oxygen, and Cool Aqua are gorgeous shades in varying depth of green. If you do have a bit of space in your bathroom then you could always experiment with a feature wall. Using the same shade in varying depths works particularly well in smaller rooms.
If you are like me and you are a bit of clean freak, then you might be going for a more sterile look. Grey’s and whites give a very modern and clean feeling, something like Soft Steel and Platinum are perfect, as are Milk White and Pure Brilliant White. If your bathroom is a particularly cold room then try injecting some warmth with colours like Wheatgrass, Snowdrop and Milk White, perfect earthy warm shades.
Organisation is a key element to the efficiency of your bathroom. No one wants to spend hours searching for specific products or implements in the morning or evening so de-cluttering your bathroom will help the overall appearance and feel of the room. You can use small decorative baskets on shelves that will hide a lot of your products and accessories and therefore make the feel room organised.
Lighting is another element to consider, and you should take into consideration all of your needs. Shaving and make-up application are everyday duties that require bright lighting but soaking in the bath or relaxing in the shower are also functions of the room so make sure you have the ability to soften the lighting with dimmer switches, lamps, and scented candles.
Flooring is an important aspect of your room. Floor tiles can be cold and uninviting but consider injecting a bit of colour here. Mosaic tiles come in all sorts of colours that can really compliment your theme. Choose towels that tie in to your chosen theme and that way they can become an accessory of your bathroom as well as a necessity. Pick your favourite towels and roll them up inside a wicker basket. You might also consider framing your mirror in a sleek frame to add a true designer feel. When your bathroom is finally decorated, you won't believe the difference an elegant design can make to helping you relax and enjoy this room. That neglected functional room may just become the centerpiece of your home.
