Olive Green - A Forgotten Colour

February 8, 2010
Olive green can in fact be a striking colour to use in interior decorating. It can be soothing or striking depending on the shade you pick. Many interior designers are big fans of olive green because when used correctly, it can create an incredibly elegant space.

This shade can be used in many ways throughout your home; however it is important to learn how to balance the colour so that it doesn’t become overwhelming. I’ve put together a few tips on how olive green can be used around your home to create balance and harmony.

You could introduce the shade into your home by painting a focal or fireplace wall in an olive green shade. Why not take a look at Mellow Sage, Invigorate or Bamboo Leaf from Crown Paints to help create a tranquil environment.

Neutral creams or beige shades compliment perfectly. Why not try Antique Cream or Snowdrop from Crown and follow the olive green shade on the artwork, throws and pillows to bring a good balance of colour to the room.

Use subtle wood tones in your selection of furniture such as bamboo to maintain a balance with the olive tones.

You can use nature as an inspiration when decorating with olive green. Green and purple are reminiscent of flowers and when they are used together in a nursery it can create a soothing colour combination.

I love using green in the kitchen and olive green is wonderful as a backsplash colour or you might consider painting your cabinet doors with a liquid gloss finish.

Rich deep olive green shades such as Tuscan Olive or Expectation from Crown can create a warm space especially in a large room with high ceilings. To create a truly elegant space, team it with dark furniture and textured upholstery such as velvet and add plenty of plump cushions.

Happy decorating!
