Perfect Pastels

Perfect Pastels

August 16, 2011
I was recently asked a question by a dear friend who was expecting her first baby. “What colour should I decorate my nursery when I don’t know the sex of the baby?” Without even thinking about it my response was pastel shades and it got me thinking about all the wonderful options pastel shades can bring. Sugared almond pink, duck egg blue, tranquil green and primrose yellow are all pretty pastel shades that give a sense of cosiness when used throughout the home. Fairy Dust, Rodeo Drive, Pink Sugar and Green Light are just some of my personal favourites from the Crown collection that would work fabulously in a nursery.

But what about those who are looking to embrace this trend throughout their home? How can they prevent their rooms looking like a children’s play room or nursery? The key is to choose pieces of furniture that have a touch of pastel. If you are choosing a baby blue sofa, make sure it has a sophisticated look. For example something with button back detailing, will give your sofa an elegant feel, while being bang on trend with the pastel blue. Another option would be to just focus the pastel colouring on walls or even introduce artwork with pastel tones. Rose pinks and pastel blues can be glamorous without being hard-edged.

Pastel shades can be easily teamed with whites, creams and beiges such as Soft Berry with Potato Cake in a living room. I’ve often found that many people worry about combining pastel shades as they think these shades can look quite feminine. Using a mix of pastel colours can create a warm feeling particularly in a living room. When pastels are combined they can look fresh, cheerful and retro with the right balance of femininity.

Bedrooms are one of the easiest spaces to introduce pastel shades into as this is somewhere we want to create a soft and relaxing mood so there is bound to be a colour you adore. If you’re a tiny bit bored with creams then why not introduce a soft shade onto your walls to refresh your look quickly without having to change all your soft furnishings. Soft Kaki, Snowfall, and Prospect Bay are all worth considering from the new Crown colourcard.

When it comes to changing your bedroom furniture, you need to make sure there is a hint of pastel rather then a large pink wardrobe, otherwise the room is certainly going to look child like.

Furniture in cream or natural hues, natural fibre rugs, and light transparent curtains with decorative blinds are a good choice to complement pastel shades on your walls. Natural fabrics in neutral colours also coordinate effortlessly.

Happy decorating!!
