Prolong that summer feelingSeptember 26, 2011
Summer brings with it a sense of freedom and energy and these are the type of qualities we probably all want echoed throughout our home year round. During the summer months, we are spoilt with vibrant uplifting shades so why not strike your home with a splash of citrus yellow or orange, hits of leafy green or pops of hot pink and let the summer spirits last a little longer! When I think of summer the first colour that springs to my mind is yellow. It can work in just about any room in your home depending on the shade or tone you choose and it guaranteed to uplift your mood. Strong yellow is not to everyone’s liking but the colour yellow can be introduced into your home in the most subtle ways. Shades such as Gentle Yellow and Beach House from Crown Paints are soft, sun faded tones which evoke a sense of familiarity and comfort. These shades are ideal for sun dappled bedrooms or living rooms. Matched with soft pastel colours of olive green, worn pinks and creams this can create the perfect ambience for relaxation.
As mentioned above yellow isn’t your only option, brilliant colours such as citrus orange, organic greens and vibrant pink shades teamed with soft neutrals will all blend seamlessly. You can't help but feel happiness and cheer when surrounded by these juicy colours! All these vibrant shades look great in white bathrooms, bedrooms or kitchens. The key is to keep the background neutral in whites or greys, or even with touches of black as not all bright shades work as well with cream tones.
Injecting a shot of bold colour will really make a feature out of your hallway instead of it being just a corridor of doors. You can also introduce colour through your staircase, the handrail, spindles or the steps.
Preparation is key for achieving a wonderful finish and maintaining a long lasting staircase where touch ups are rarely needed. The steps will need to be completely dust free and cracks or open joints should be filled prior to painting. The next step is to apply a primer to your stairs. Crown Paints provide an excellent quick drying Multi-Surface primer undercoat. It helps provide adhesion before painting your top coat giving you the perfect finish. If your stairs has been previously treated Crown Paints has a great product called Grip Extreme saving you time and effort as you do not need to sand down the wood first.
The next step is to apply your chosen paint colour making sure to apply the paint in the direction of the grain. Finish off your staircase with Sadolin Polyurethane Floor Clear Varnish but bear in mind that this may alter the colour of your second coat slightly. You should try and leave the stair paint to harden for as long as possible.
Another option is to paint the doors in your hallway a bright primary colour and leave your walls neutral. This can create a feeling of space and make paintings or framed prints stand out more.
An interesting and low-cost way to update and ‘summerise’ furniture, is to paint it in one of these citrus shades. Colours such as sapphire blue and bright greens look particularly good, especially in a bedroom, dining or kitchen space. You could try painting the insides of drawers or doors or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous then why not paint the unit in one block colour. The options are endless so no need to be timid about your colour options. Simplicity, sunshine and colour; bring it all to your home.
