Reuse and Recycle Old Furniture in your Home

January 11, 2010
There are, in fact so many things you can do to give your furniture a new lease of life and you don’t need to be a master carpenter to achieve this. All it takes is a little inspiration. Now, more than ever, people are looking at what they already have in their home instead of going out and buying something new.

Simply moving pieces of furniture from one room to another can give a room a whole new life. Have you ever considered moving a small dresser into your bathroom for storage or even attaching a glass cabinet to a kitchen island to store glassware and crockery?

You can simply change the knobs on a chest of drawers or replace missing parts, or even reuse the mirrors from an old dressing table mounted on a wall.

Painting furniture is also a fantastic way to revamp a much loved piece of furniture. This is an inexpensive and creative way to update and match what you already have in your home.

Crown Paints has a great product called Grip Extreme which when applied allows a top coat to adhere to wood surfaces, saving you time and effort as you do not need to sand down the wood first. You can then apply the top coat with a Satin or Gloss depending on the finish you want to achieve for your furniture. A simple lick of paint can really bring a piece of furniture back to life.

Some great colours to work with to update your home are light creams and warm whites; try to stay away from bright whites as they can seem harsh against most painted walls and can mark easily.

Why not be a little daring and try a bold colour like bright blue, pink or purple on a book shelf or chair? It’s a simple way to add a splash of colour to a room. If you are painting a chest of drawers in a child’s room you may like to be adventurous and paint individual drawers in various colours.

To create a shabby chic look, you can add appliqué to a piece of furniture before you paint. I find this really works on vintage furniture when you paint them in a warm white. You can find some beautiful appliqués on The Bella Cottage and Shabby Suite's websites.

Happy decorating and most of all have fun with it,
Neville
