Spruce up your exterior door for the holidaysSeptember 30, 2010
With a number of holidays coming up in the next few weeks and months such as Halloween and Christmas you are bound to have quite a number of visitors to your home. So now might be the best time to paint your exterior door before the weather turns colder. Painting a front door is a simple project and can be completed in under a day. Look to the weather forecast for the day ahead and hope that it stays fine so that you will be able to finish the job without interruptions.
Sandtex has a great range of exterior paints including gloss paints especially formulated for wooden and metal doors. If you have had the same doors and windows for a long period of time, why not choose a colour that truly pops like Pillar Box Red or Park Bench Green. This is an effective way to really stand out from your neighbours and holiday decorations will look stunning against such a striking background.
Before you start painting your door, it’s important that you first prepare the wood for paint. If the existing paint is still in good condition simply wash the door down in warm soapy water and lightly sand to provide a good base for the paint. In cases where the paint is flaking it will need to be striped right back with rough sandpaper or an electric hot air gun. If there are any holes or cracks in the wood these will need to be filled with wood filler and sanded level when dry. Before you begin painting, remove any door knobs or knockers where possible to avoid staining them with paint. For a top quality, long lasting finish, use an undercoat that is lighter than the topcoat you intend to use. You may need a number of different brush sizes to paint all areas of the door. Make sure to apply the paint in the direction of the grain and do not repaint over paint that has already started to dry as this will ruin the smooth finish. Now that your door is freshly painted, why not invest in a new door knocker. There are many bargains to be had online for brand new door knockers that can add a unique touch to your home. Try eBay Ireland for some fantastic pocket friendly options. If there are panels in your door these could also be painted a contrasting colour. If your exterior door is more neutral why not get a bit more creative with your colour choice, there really are no limits to what you can do especially when it comes to decorating for the holidays. Happy painting!
