Student Study Space

August 11, 2011
As many students prepare to embark on college life, parents are faced with the dilemma of creating a calm study area either in the family home or in rented accommodation that will encourage their son or daughter to study. Students of all ages need their own space for studying so I’m hoping my tips can be applied to any environment to help create that perfect place for concentration.

Before getting down to the nuts and bolts of creating the perfect study space, it’s important to choose the ideal location particularly if the space is large or is going to be used as a multipurpose room such as his or her bedroom or in the living room.

When it comes to choosing colours for your study, try to stay with fresh shades as this will give a bright and vibrant look. Greens, creams and pale yellows are a good option as not only are they gender neutral they are also simple and not too overpowering.

Honey Lust, Golden Glow or Primrose Yellow from Crown Paints are great colour options for the study. These subtle warm shades will work beautifully and will assist in creating an energetic atmosphere. Yellow is said to help focus our minds, induce clear thinking and decision making. Elegant Scent or Apple Tree is well worth a look if you want to go for a green shade. Green is perfect for relaxation and helps promote concentration.

Lighting is a huge factor to be considered in a room that will be used primarily for reading and writing so it should be planned very carefully to avoid strain on the eyes. Natural lighting is the best source which is why it’s important to bare this in mind when selecting the dedicated study area. Recessed lighting provides illumination for the entire room and should be carefully placed so it highlights the complete workplace. Anti glare lighting should be purchased and task lighting is a good option to ensure pleasant reading time.

Furniture is another important factor when decorating a study but should be kept to a minimum. Begin arranging the furniture, if there is a television in the room keep the desk facing the opposite direction to avoid temptation. The designated study space should not be used for anything other than studying to avoid concentration loss.

The main goal when choosing furniture for a study room is to help keep students organised and eliminate distractions. A desk is absolutely essential for a study space. Have a comfortable chair at the desk, but not one that is too comfortable where one might fall asleep. ☺ A bookcase would be a great addition where a student can display books as well as some of their personal belongings. This will create a balanced environment in which to work.

You might also like to create a breakout area by adding an armchair sofa or beanbag. Your son or daughter might like to revise essays while relaxing in an armchair.

I hope this will help you create the perfect study space.

Happy decorating!
