The Great OutdoorsJune 28, 2010
Let’s face it very few of us have the time and inspiration to create a designer finish garden that can be maintained all year round. This got me thinking surely there is a more practical way to inject some colour into our gardens that doesn’t take up too much time.
Why not colour our gardens beautiful. We can paint our patio furniture, and turn our old decking into the perfect backdrop for the summer.
If you have a decking area this will need to be prepared for revamping. Start by brushing the surface with a stiff broom to remove dirt and debris, and use a fungicidal wash to remove any algal or mould growth. Allow the decking to dry and then clean it using a broom dampened with methylated spirits or cellulose thinners.
Apply the finish in a full flowing coat in the direction of the grain and work along the length of each board to avoid the appearance of 'overlap' marks. You will need a product that is hardwearing and gives your decking protection against the weather as well as resisting mould and fungal growth and Sadolin Decking Stain & Preserver gives you this 2 in 1 protection.
For outdoor wooden furniture, use a stiff bristle brush to remove dirt and debris. Sand any grey weathered timber and then clean the surface down. Apply Sadolin Garden Furniture Oil in a full, flowing coat with a brush or lint-free cloth in the direction of the grain. Any excess oil should be removed after 1 hour using a dry cloth.
Why not add a splash of colour to a bare brick wall. Sandtex Masonry Paints offer a great selection of colourful exterior paints that are well worth a look such as Terracotta, Snowbird and Hot Brick.
From sandy beaches to rocky coves, and windswept costs to cityscapes, the Crown Colourmix Pick 'n' Mix collection will help you add a touch of your favourite Irish landscape with a shade to complement every style of garden.
Once you have all your painting done, let’s add some accessories to complete our newly spruced up garden. Add a parasol to the patio table and some comfy durable seat cushions to your chairs. There are some beautiful outdoor soft furnishings available in local DIY stores and not only will it make your seats more comfortable but will really add to the overall feel of the area.
One thing I’m investing in this summer is a new barbeque. There are some really funky designs and colours available this year and it is the perfect excuse to invite friends and family around to show off your new and improved outdoors.
If you’re barbeque get-togethers are anything like mine then you will need to add some garden lights to your outdoors. Maybe some pier top lanterns will do the trick. If your budget allows it an outside heater would also be a good investment for those chilly summer nights.
By applying a few tips like these your garden will be transformed into a space that you can enjoy spending time in.
Happy garden decorating!
