The psychology of colour

August 24, 2009
Colour has a massive impact on people’s lives whether they believe it or not. Different colours evoke different emotions and choosing the right colours for your home can be a very difficult but enjoyable thing to do. Do not underestimate the power that colour can have in your home – it is a mirror of who you are and your personality type.

Yellow tends to be the happiest colour as it makes people feel cheerful, happy and full of energy. Choose subtle tones of yellow if you would like to paint a whole room rather than bright tones as these can be quite difficult to take. Remember that people have a tendency to love or hate yellow so make sure everyone is consulted before you paint a room.

I would recommend living rooms and kitchens for this colour as we tend to spend a lot of time here and it should bring a warm glow to the atmosphere!

Believe it or not, blue is liked universally by both genders so this colour will probably suit most people in your home. It has a tendency to relax, calm and sooth a person. People choose blue for their bedroom for this exact reason. Soft, subtle blues will work beautifully with soft white walls. Add texture with throws and cushions and you will have the ultimate boudoir.

As blue is also considered to be clean colour it works very well in bathrooms as a serene and calm place to be. When light is reflected in a ‘blue’ room it helps create an air of freshness. Blue also stimulates clear thought so it’s also perfect for any children studying in their room, or equally, it can work well in a home office or study.

Red is an exceptionally powerful colour so the most important thing to consider when using red is that it should only be used on an accent wall. It gives off a very positive vibe in a room and helps to create a warmth and energy.

Red has the most visual impact of all the colours. It is perfect in dining rooms, hallways and living rooms as it will help create warm and inviting atmosphere – perfect if you want to do any entertaining!

Green brings us back to nature. Like blue it has a tendency to calm and relax a person as they are seen as a healing colour. The colour is perfect for bringing nature into your home so for refreshment, peace, rest and harmony, green is the colour for you. It will work exceptionally well in a dining room or conservatory with large windows, which is overlooking a garden. It brings everything in and blurs the line between indoors and outdoors.

Purple is one of this year’s trends and is a great colour to use in the home. But be warned, be very careful with a strong purple as it can overpower a room. If you are insistent on using it then make sure that you are not directly looking at it – behind the bed is perfect. Also remember that purple stimulates people to eat sweet things. Consider the colour of a lot of chocolate bar wrappers!

Soft purples, such as lilacs work beautifully in most rooms in your home as it is very soothing and calming and is also a very pretty and feminine colour.

Remember strong tones of any colour should be used as an accent wall while combing subtle tones of the same colour can help harmonise and bring together a room that is both relaxing and inviting for all member of your home.

Happy decorating!
