Winter WarmersNovember 17, 2011
With the cold winter season upon us, this is the time of year that we all want to wrap up in front of a roaring fire in a cosy room. This is the perfect excuse to give the design and décor of your home a new lease of life to reflect the season. The changes that you make don’t have to be monumental, just a regular update here and there can add a greater warmth and comfort to your home.
In winter we tend to feel a little blue, so you should add some beautiful bold colour palettes and textures to brighten your mood. This is sure to give you that lift when you come in from the cold. Colours that are particularly popular and prominent this winter are deep red, grey and yellow shades.
Lets start with grey. When considering a colour scheme, this might seem like a drab shade for a living space however pairing grey with pops of yellow is an amazing way to liven up a space. Shades such as Silver Spoon, Soft Steel and Aspen Silver are beautiful greys that work wonderfully as a back drop for vibrant yellow pillows and accents. Also, as grey can open up a room and make it feel larger, this interior decorating trend is an easy way to transform a smaller space. Shades of yellow that will work fantastically with grey are Yellow Dark or Hot Sun to create that wow factor. If you love the effect but fancy a change at a different time of year, the yellow accent can easily be substituted for other colours as grey is such a versatile backdrop colour.
Try making use of Christmassy colours to really create a cosy atmosphere and paint a wall red to make a space feel warmer and more vibrant. You can paint your living room area red, and compliment the space with pumpkin coloured pillows as well as ivory and brown accents. Gold fixtures promote the warm undertones of a red space. Red paints come in a wide range of shades from maroon, to tomato, to classic fire-engine red. English Fire, Crimson Kiss and Fireside will all work wonderfully to create the desired rich look.
When considering your living room floor, the flooring you choose should be both practical and durable. This choice affects every other element of your design and with the variety of materials, colours and textures available today, your choices are endless. Laminate wood is a popular choice for contemporary living rooms as it feels good underfoot and creates a warm look while being very much the practical choice. I would recommend adding a deep pile rug which will add a lovely sense of cosiness to the room.
Cushions and throws are simple yet stylish ways to give a room a new look while keeping you comfy this winter for those long evenings in. Cushions allow you to add depth and colour and to create a more inviting space. There are all kinds of fabrics and designs available so you are guaranteed to get something that will really compliment your chosen colour scheme.
I hope these winter trends will help you transform and cosy up your home just in time for Christmas. Colour is a very personal choice and it’s important to remember that when choosing new colour schemes throughout your home.
Happy decorating!
