Working from home

Working from home

October 24, 2011
Do you work from home? A lot of us don’t generally get into the habit of working from home but it can be nice to have the option from time to time. While the winter season is upon us, this is the perfect time to add an office space to your home. In order to be productive it is important to have a separate office area where you can dedicate your time and effort to your work and this in itself gives you a better life/work balance.

One of the most important things when deciding on the design of your office is working out how you might integrate it into your existing home décor. An office must be a place of clear thinking and too much clutter and junk will not help you along on this process so clear out the room and start off with a blank canvas. You need to make sure that it is set up to serve your work needs and you also need to ensure that it is a place where you will enjoy spending your time.

Start by choosing the colour scheme for your office. Shades of green work particularly well in an office because it’s said to help with clear thinking and leaves you feeling somewhat calm and relaxed which is perfect for a days work. I recommend that you have a look at the Crown colour card as shades such as Almost Sage and Mellow Green will work perfectly and will be sure to get those creative juices flowing.

If green isn’t to your liking then why not opt for a more vibrant colour such as yellow. Sunrise and Yellow Mid are bright and cheery colours which will keep you in a good mood all day and will create a warm atmosphere in your office space.

Furniture in an office space is very important so be sure to choose carefully. The first thing I would recommend is that you choose a supportive chair as it will benefit you in the long-term, preventing repetitive strain injury and lower back pain. Foot-rests and anti-glare screens for your computer are also hugely important assets to your office.

Lighting has to be given some consideration in a room that will be used primarily for reading and writing so it should be planned very carefully to avoid strain on eyes. Ideally natural light is the best source and it would be recommended that your desk is positioned beside the window to allow full use of any natural light. Free standing lamps can be a feature in an office as well as a functional fixture.

Personalising your office is a must; perhaps frame a couple of your favourite photos of family or friends and have these positioned throughout the room. I find these little touches help for inspiration. A notice board also adds a nice touch and as well as work commitment paperwork, you can also pin up your favourite invites or magazine cut outs to further inspire. All you need now is a simple blind for the window in a natural colour which can be used if you need more privacy.

Your home office doesn’t have to be drab and boring. With a little bit of effort and by following these guidelines you can create the perfect space that will be both a practical and comfortable place that you won’t mind spending your time in.

Happy Decorating!
