Niamh, Dublin
Hi Neville. I’d really like to put a stamp on my home and would love to use black more throughout but I’m afraid it might turn out to be dark and drab. Do you have any hints and tips for using this colour?

Black is a wonderful colour to incorporate into your home and is rapidly gaining popularity. It brings style, sophistication and elegance and if used correctly can add a dramatic effect to any room!

Whatever you do don’t be afraid of black! It needs to be used with care but it has many uses throughout the home all of which I have listed below. It can effectively completely transform a room from plain and dull to mesmerising and chic!

Where to use Black:

The one thing to remember is that black should not be used on all four walls unless it’s for a specific reason. One if the easiest ways to use the colour is on an accent wall – perhaps on the wall where your fireplace is. Other ways to use to subtly incorporate it into your home is on trims such as skirting boards, door frames, a radiator cover or simply rejuvenate an old piece of furniture!

Remember - black is the ultimate silhouette colour - it’s not the colour itself but rather what you put in front of it. A plain black wall with blocks of colour such as cream / ivory will make a stunning feature wall. Take something such as a pictures or a mirror and impose it in front of the colour – instant designer chic!

It is an excellent colour to hide blemishes or discrepancies on walls. Use a matt black and it often goes unnoticed. This works really well on walls that have been marked – possibly by young hands!

The colour can be used as a focal point that grounds, anchors, and adds a sophisticated look to a space. Mixed with silver metallics and high sheen finishes, along with rich textures, any room can benefit from the sophistication of this striking palette.

For an unexpected colour punch, add accent tones such as dramatic red or stark white. Or simply maintain the room’s classic undertones with a subtle pink or taupe. The mixture of these colours brings an understated glamour to any room and can immediately add a designer touch!

So what are you waiting for? Bid farewell to bland walls and bring black back to life in your home!
