I have a son and daughter at home studying their hearts out for the Junior and Leaving Cert. They are spending lots of time in their rooms and I would like to make the space as comfortable and relaxing as possible. I have heard that certain colours can help people’s memory, is there a particular colour I should paint their rooms to help them during these tough months?
I remember those days of study, and it is difficult being confined to a room looking at text books, and I competently agree with you, the room should be calming and inspirational. Your children’s study environment is incredibly important and there are certain colours that can help with memory and can create the optimum atmosphere for study.

For instance, purple is associated with creativity and is thought to boost imagination. It is great to use in moderation on a feature wall, or use a lighter shade of violet or lavender on all four walls like Simple Lilac or Soap Stream.

The purples might not suit your son’s room, but green is perfect for relaxation and for promoting concentration. Blue is also a very calming colour and inspires mental control, clarity and creativity/ It is a colour also thought to promote learning and self empowerment. Two Crown Paints shades to try are Lupin and Tranquillity. Use Crown Breatheasy paint in their rooms as it does not have the lingering just painted smell, which won’t cut down on their study time, so they will have no excuse.

Yellow is a happy, bright, and uplifting colour. It is linked with the intellectual side of the mind, and the expression of thoughts. It helps to focus our minds, induce clear thinking, and decision making. Try Crown Paints yellows in Sunrise, Energise or Happy Daze. Another great tip is to buy yellow note pages; I found they helped me remember my study notes during my college years.

If your kids are feeling down and fed up with studying, which we can all understand, I would recommend using a mix of pastel orange or peach and cream. These colours work great together, and you can either paint two walls cream and two walls peach or even mix it up with peach and cream vertical strips. This combination adds a cheerful and lively mood to the room. The creams earthy tones create a sense of warmth and comfort. Try Crowns Snow Drop, Snowfall, and Wheatgrass.

No matter what colours you choose it is always nice to have pictures, photos or posters in the room to give the space life and to allow your children personalise their room. Having a space that is purely their own can motivate a child immensely as well as giving them confidence.

Natural light is also very important in a child’s room; it promotes a sense of well being and is healthy when studying.

Hope this helps the little studiers, exams are never an easy thing but creating a positive environment always helps.

Happy decorating!
