I have been living in my house for over 6 years now and for that period it has mostly been painted in neutral shades which I must say I am getting quite bored of. I think it’s time for a splash of colour and I have heard of colour blocking which sounds interesting. Could you give me some hints and tips on how to achieve a colour block look and any colours you think could work well to add a wow factor to my home?
Colour blocking has been such a big fashion trend this year and there’s no need to limit it to your wardrobe. Loud and proud colour combinations make for a super-chic, on trend and confident look that makes people happy and most definitely can be incorporated into your home. This year has been called the ‘year of colour’ so what an ideal time to get colour blocking in your home.
Colour blocking refers to painting the walls in a room in a series of blocks and shapes rather than decorating the walls with artwork. Colour blocking is done by selecting zones on a wall or ceiling and painting them a different colour from the main wall colour. The fabulous thing about colour blocking is it can be done in whatever block size you choose and can be done with as many colours as you want.
Studies show that colour in your home can bring balance, energy and prosperity - a perfect reason to get painting. When it comes to choosing colours there really is an endless amount of choice. To achieve the wow factor and to make a real statement you could paint at least three varied sizes of blocks on a wall in many colours.
Colour blocking can be used to create a fun look or a sophisticated look, so your colour choice will depend on the type of atmosphere you want to create in a room. I recommend that you take a look at a Crown Paints colour card which has a wealth of fantastic colours to choose from.
For a real sense of fun, why not choose bold colours that will be sure to add the wow factor to any room. Combining shades such as Shocking Pink and Sticky Fingers to a child’s bedroom will create a real sense of fun and drama. In your kitchen you could choose zesty green to add a burst of colour. Green is known to be the colour of balance and is associated with harmony and refreshment. Shades such as Pea Pod and Lime Green would add an invigorating touch that is perfect for a kitchen.
If you’re looking to create a muted and sophisticated space then choose subtle colour combinations, this will create a serene feeling and make the room feel inviting. Prom Night and Purple Heart work wonderfully together in a dining room and will give a bold new look to your room. To give a relaxing feel to a bathroom, Sky High and Sea Spirit will create a room you are sure to want to spend time in.
Even if you’re not inclined to incorporate colour blocking into your home in a large scale then use the colour blocking concept as inspiration in your décor. Try placing several different hues of throw pillows onto your neutral couch. Try a colour blocked duvet to incorporate some fun into your bedroom or line a black shelf with brightly coloured ornaments or vases.
Always remember that colour is a very personal choice and while I am happy to guide and advise you, keep in mind that you will have to live with the colour so the final decision should ultimately lie in your hands.
Colour blocking is all about the pop, regardless of form. Your imagination is the absolute limit so be sure to have some fun.
Happy Decorating!
