I have recently added a conservatory to my home and it is a big bright room and looks fantastic. The only thing is I am completely lost on ideas on how to decorate a room like this. The conservatory at the moment is a blank canvas and it is looking out onto our beautiful garden that has recently been re-done. I’m not keen on pale colours like beige or white so anything other than this would be brilliant.

Decorating a conservatory is a wonderful opportunity to showcase and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, without leaving the comfort of your home.  A conservatory is a wonderful retreat for all members of the family, and is a perfect place to unwind at the end of a long day.  I understand why you want to get this space decorated.

I would advise that you keep your conservatory design consistent with the decor of your home. Conservatories are generally added to homes, so they don't always follow the same architectural design of the rest of the house. To keep the room from seeming too disjointed from the rest of your home, keep one of the design elements consistent.  Use a similar color scheme, furniture style or fabric choice as is found in an adjoining area. Incorporating a common element allows the room to stand apart from the other spaces in your home without seeming out of place.

As your conservatory is looking out on to your garden why not incorporate colours that enhance the sense of outdoors.  To bring elements of nature into your room the best colour options are green, blues and yellows which will give your room a bright and airy feel.

Green is a calming, relaxing and a natural colour which works particularly well in rooms to create an inviting space.  Crown Paints have a fabulous range of subtle green shades such as Mellow Sage, Soft Khaki and Lunch Date.  Also take a look at the Crown Colourmix Classic Collection and shades such as Elegant Scent, Elegant Gown and Elegant Chiffon which are beautiful shades of duck egg blue that would add a real sense of sophistication to your conservatory.

Alternatively if green isn’t to your liking you could also opt for shades of yellow.  Yellow is a happy, bright, and uplifting colour and would also be a good choice for a conservatory.  Shades such as Sunrise, Just Lemon and Lemon Squash would be a good choice for your sunroom and would work wonderfully to brighten up the room all year round.

If you have green fingers, add plants and flowers to your room in order to create a nice flow from inside to out. Live plants thrive in the abundant natural light provided by the many windows.  A visit to a garden centre is a must as there are some beautiful potted indoor plants that could be used to add a real exotic feel to the room.  These are the decorative elements that highlight the beauty of nature and make a conservatory a showpiece of your home.

Furniture that is at home both indoors and outdoors in natural materials work well to create an atmosphere of casual relaxation.  Conservatory furniture should be sun proof and heat proof so materials such as wicker, rattan and sisal are essential.  These will not become damaged under the sun’s rays and are known for durability and style.

Soft furnishings and accessories are a great way to complete the overall look and feel of your newly decorated conservatory. It allows you to add depth and colour and to create a more inviting space.  Cushions, throws and rugs will add to the comfort of your room although be sure that you check the labels and only choose materials which are UV-resistant as you will need them to withstand the heat of the sun.

Shelving will also be a good addition to your room. Use them to display personal photos, ornaments or even a few of your favourite novels from your book collection to enjoy during long summer evenings. It is these touches that will create a tranquil environment that you can escape to. Another nice focal point for this space is a large statement piece of artwork.  Use nature-inspired decorative motifs as well, such as leaves, flowers and animals or a dramatic abstract artwork will set the mood of the room.

Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through when you are decorating this space.  This room is for enjoyment and relaxation and this should be reflected in its style.  I hope these tips help you to create a room that you love spending time in all year round.

Happy Decorating!
