I have recently started learning about colour therapy and spiritual healing and how different colours have certain effects on the body. I would love to introduce some of these colours into my home and build more of a knowledge base about how colour affect us. Do you have any recommendations on how best to introduce colour therapy into my home and what colours to use?
Neville Knott

It really is fabulous that you have decided to start learning about colour therapy and spiritual healing. Many people don’t realise that the colours we are surrounded by have a huge impact on our behaviour and overall well-being.

The use of colour as a therapy is a truly holistic, non-invasive and powerful therapy which dates back thousands of years. It is sometimes referred to as chromotherapy, light therapy or colourology. The aim of colour therapy is to balance and enhance our body’s energy centres which are also known as our chakras by using the colours of the light spectrum which in turn helps to stimulate our body’s own healing process.

For instance, yellow is an energetic colour representing sunshine, vitality and happiness. Shades such as Sunrise, Energise and Happy Daze from Crown Paints are guaranteed to work in your home as yellow is linked with optimism, confidence, self esteem and emotional strength.

Pink is associated with physical tranquility, survival and nurturing warmth. It is said to help soothe us so it would certainly be perfect in spiritual healing. Shades such as Couture or Mademoiselle are just some colour choices. Elegant Rose and Elegant Blush from the Crown Classic Collection would work really well in a master bedroom.

Green is known to be the colour of balance and is associated with harmony, rest, peace and refreshment. Shades such as Soft Lime, Apple Mist or Bamboo Leaf would all work equally well to create the desired sense of balance particularly in a kitchen and dining room space.

Blue is the colour of the mind and is essentially known for its soothing ability. It is a very calming colour and inspires clarity, mental control and is also thought to promote self empowerment. Strong blues such as Sea Spirit or Blue Mosel will stimulate clear thought and lighter, soft blues such as Moonlight Bay or Palest Blue will calm the mind and aid concentration.
Brown is known for its warmth, earthiness and reliability and has associations with the earth and the natural world. It is a solid, reliable colour and most people find it to be a supportive shade. Feeling close and surrounded by earthy tones can help with healing. Try shades such as Choc Chip, Cocoa, Wildwood, and Baking Day.

Purple is associated with spiritual awareness and creativity. It is highly introversive and encourages deep contemplation or meditation. It is a fabulous choice of colour to use in moderation. Modern Chic would work well on a feature wall or use a lighter shade of violet or lavender on all four walls like Simple Lilac or Soap Stream.
No matter what colours you choose it is always a good idea to have pictures and photos in your rooms to give the space life and personality. Surrounding yourself with happy memories and smiling faces is often the best therapy. Where possible make the most out of the natural light that is available to you because it gives a sense of well being and it promotes health.

Soft furnishings and accessories are a great way to complete the overall look and feel of your newly decorated home. It allows you to add depth and colour and to create a more inviting space. Where possible I would recommend adding cushions, throws and rugs as this will add to the comfort of your rooms. To add a spiritual feel, candles can be a fabulous way to create a relaxed feel to your rooms.

With this added knowledge of colours I hope you can create a home that is spiritually healing and the perfect retreat for you and your family. Your home should reflect your personality so don’t forget to let your creative side free.

Happy decorating!
