I really want to give my home a clean, crisp finish. I know that white is really popular for this but for me, it always ends up looking bland – help!

Believe it or not, white is one of the most versatile colours available and probably the most popular one for home décor. It is an excellent starting point for any home and can help resolve a multitude of problems in a space.

For example by painting a ceiling brilliant white, a room is heightened. Painting two walls white and two walls beige will stretch a room. White is your best friend when you’re trying to make any room seem larger than it actually is. Small rooms can appear larger with white walls, so transform that box room into a light airy retreat with the simple use of white.

The colour reflects light wonderfully, giving your home a clean, crisp, airy feeling and becomes alive with a shrewd use of colours. Add blood red, a zesty green or sunshine yellow to really make your room come alive and add an extra punch to your interior décor.

If you don’t want to add colour, remember that there are many different variations of white. From brilliant white to stone white, soft subtleties in the colour can help create different atmospheres throughout the house. There are an infinite number of white shades available that work together or separately to create different moods in your home. Choose a variety of tones to achieve a warm and inviting look, not a cold and sterile atmosphere.

Used frequently in bathrooms and kitchens, white gives everyone the impression of cleanliness and good hygiene - dirt is easily seen and removed. But did you know it white is has many other uses too?

Walls painted stark white or a soft, ivory white serve as a perfect background for framed photographs, or artwork. Choose dark wood or painted black frames for the ultimate in cool sophistication.

For novice interior decorators, white is your best friend! Start off with white walls and gradually build up colour around it – the perfect way to build confidence when bringing colour into your home.

Highlight any magnificent forms of architecture through the use of white. This is a technique commonly used with modernist interiors as it emphasises the focal point in the room.

So no matter what you’re doing with your home, make sure that white is a part of it. Whether it’s a large part of it or a small part of it, it’s completely up to you!
