My husband and I recently bought a holiday home in the country. We made this purchase so we could escape from the “hustle and bustle” of the city with our two children during holiday periods. We want to create a real country home and would love to make it cosy with a more natural, rustic feel, something totally different from our home in the city. Can you give me some advice on how to achieve this?

Congratulations on your new home! I am a big fan of retreating to the country. It is a great way to relax and unwind after a long week working in the city. I am sure you cannot wait to get started on decorating your new country retreat, so here are some tips on how to achieve that ultimate country look.

Comfort is key when creating a warm and homely atmosphere. This means keeping things simple with natural rich earth tones and natural textures that evoke a relaxing and easygoing atmosphere. There are many features that you will need to think about when creating this type of look from colour and lighting to window treatment and accessories but the most important aspect is continuity as this is what will make your home most attractive.

When it comes to selecting colours for your walls the Classic Collection from Crown is the perfect place to start as it has a wide range of simple hues and tones. Classic Rouge, Classic Beige, Organic Neutral and Organic Silk are just a few tones that I think will work wonderfully in your new home particularly in the bedrooms. These colours are easy to work with and serve as a neutral canvas for other colors and designs that you may introduce in the rooms.

Lighting will play a key role in creating that cosy comfortable atmosphere. Traditional antique lamps in a wrought iron or brass finish will be a good option. You have a number of options for your window treatment, shutters or wood blinds will both work well and if your budget stretches you should add decorative curtains in accent colours to complete the look.

The kitchen should be the heart of any country home and for the ultimate farmhouse kitchen look you should opt for a natural wood finish. B&Q do a fantastic rustic style solid framed oak Hedingham kitchen which would work perfectly.

For your walls, I recommend Satin Jade from Crown Paints as it will create a nice contrast with the wood furnishings.

The ultimate accessory for any country kitchen has to be a range cooker with some flagstone flooring. Add a wrought iron pot rack for the perfect rustic finish. No farmhouse kitchen would be complete without a kitchen clock hanging over the range. Check out Dunnes Stores homeware department for some great accessories.

When I think of a country house one thing that springs to mind is a big open roaring fire which leads me to the living room. This is the room where you and your family will spend most of your time together, relaxing, watching TV, and reading the papers so it is important to get the balance right. Ideally this room should be comfortable and cosy while expressing aspects of your personality. Starting with wall colour Designer Organics from Crown’s Designer Collection is the perfect place for inspiration. This collection of rich earth tones will infuse this space with a rustic charm.

Toasted Almond would also work perfectly as not only will it reflect light during the day but will also create a cosy and inviting atmosphere in the evening. This colour also works well with a stone fire place and solid wood floorings. A comfy sofa in cream or brown teamed with cream length floral curtains will complete the look. IKEA has some fantastic fabric sofas at reasonable prices which are well worth a look.

Accessories such as wicker baskets, blanket chests, dressers and handmade quilts and cushion covers are just a few finishing touches you can add to various rooms over time.

I hope these tips help you to achieve a harmonious country experience in your new holiday home.

Happy decorating,
Neville
