How to avoid common painting mistakes on your next project

Painting is a simple and straightforward way to refresh your interiors and rejuvenate your home. At Crown, we want to empower everyone to paint their own possible. We believe that everyone should have the knowledge to feel confident in tackling their own painting projects. This is why understanding the basics is so helpful. Even seasoned DIYers often fall prey to common mistakes. Below, we’ll cover some pitfalls to avoid when painting and some top tips to achieve a professional finish.

1. Choosing low-quality tools: Poor-quality brushes and rollers can cause uneven paint application, visible brush strokes, and shedding bristles. To keep these issues from happening, invest in high-quality tools from trusted brands or stores. While they may cost a bit more initially, they offer better performance and durability. Opt for synthetic bristles for water-based paints and natural bristles for oil-based paints.

2. Using low-quality paints: Low-cost paint has the potential undermine all your careful efforts. Low cost paint often requires multiple coats to achieve the desired colour and may result in poor coverage, uneven texture, and a paint job that doesn’t stand the test of time.  Investing in paint that ensures smooth application, proper adhesion, and a long-lasting, vibrant finish will ensure a great paint job. Our Walls & Ceilings Matt and Mid Sheen Emulsion range captures the essence of Crown, offering vibrant colours with the potential to transform any space. With Vegan Verified ingredients, our unique breatheasy® 99% solvent-free formula, and eco-friendly packaging made from 100% recycled plastic, we prioritise both your health and the planet. Our trend-forward colours, curated by experts, ensure your home stays stylish, while the the thick, creamy paint formulation delivers flawless coverage.

3. Painting in the wrong conditions: Temperature and humidity can greatly affect how paint dries. Painting in extreme heat, cold, or high humidity can lead to issues like blistering, cracking, or slow drying times. Always paint in moderate, controlled conditions to ensure the best results.

4. Skipping preparation steps: Rushing to paint without proper preparation can lead to disappointing results. Take the time to complete your prep carefully. Clean walls, fill holes or cracks, and sand rough areas to help achieve a smooth finish. These steps might seem tedious, but they’ll be well worth it in the end. We also always recommend using a primer.

5. Ignoring paint compatibility: Using incompatible paints (e.g., using a matt paint over a previous sheen finish like silk, gloss, or mid sheen) can lead to peeling, cracking, or poor adhesion. Always be aware of the properties of any existing paint on the walls/trimming and make sure your new paint is compatible.

6. Not taping off edges properly: Skipping this step or poorly applying painter’s tape can result in uneven edges and messy lines. Take some time to apply tape carefully and press it down firmly to prevent paint from seeping underneath.

7. Overloading the brush or roller: Applying too much paint at once can cause drips, uneven application, and wasted paint. Don’t be heavy handed—dip your brush or roller lightly into the paint, then tap off the excess. If using a roller, use a tray to roll off the excess before applying. Thin, even coats will give you a smoother, drip-free finish.

8. Not leaving enough drying time between coats: Painting over wet or tacky paint can cause streaks as well as an uneven finish. Be patient with the process and let each coat dry fully before applying the next one. Follow the drying times recommended on the paint tin as these will vary from formula to formula.

9. Painting without adequate ventilation: Painting in poorly ventilated areas can lead to the buildup of harmful fumes, particularly with solvent-based paints, and slow down the drying process. Ensure you have good ventilation by opening windows and doors and using fans to keep the air circulating. Fortunately, our Breatheasy® 99% solvent-free formula minimises airborne irritants, creating a healthier environment for your family.

10. Over-brushing or over-rolling: Continuing to brush or roll over partially dried paint can create visible brush marks, streaks, or an uneven finish. Apply the paint and then leave it to dry—avoid the temptation to go back over it.

Avoiding the common painting mistakes above can mean the difference between a DIY mishap and a beautifully finished room. Proper preparation, along with the right tools and techniques, is key to achieving a professional look. For all your painting needs, visit your local Crown Paints stockist.
